These guards do involve a trip to the dentist and cost substantially more than the stock and boil and bite guards but are also of higher quality. Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth and create a customized guard using the mold. For serious athletes, the dental mouth protector is probably the way to go. No matter what kind of guard you choose consider replacing it after each sports season so it does not get worn and lose effectiveness.
