Grinding Teeth Mouth Guard
Lots of people grind their teeth, especially during sleep. There are certain medications such as some SSRI antidepressants for which bruxism, or teeth grinding, may be a side effect. Some people grind their teeth because of stress, while others do so because of dental problems. If you are someone suffering from bruxism you should consider a grinding teeth mouth guard. Whether you should get a guard from the store or go to the dentist depends on your particular case.
If your sleeping partner has informed you that you grind your teeth at night but you are experiencing no physical discomfort, you may be able to get a boil and bite mouth guard from the pharmacy. These are quite affordable and easy to use. You simply dip the guard in boiling water for the instructed duration of time, then place it in your mouth and gently bite down. The guard cools quickly to form an impression of your teeth for a custom fit. You will find these guards are made to be worn at night and made to prevent the teeth from grinding together. Wearing them at the first sign of teeth grinding can prevent further damage such as dysfunction in the jaw joint or TMJ.
A store bought mouth guard is not necessarily a good idea for someone suffering from TMJ disorder. TMJ is an abbreviation for temporomandibular joint, an area of the jaw that can cause great pain and discomfort in the face if there is a problem with it. Often TMJ problems are caused by bruxism but can be alleviated by a dental mouth guard. You will notice that the store bought mouth guards direct you not to use them for TMJ issues, so if this is what you are dealing with a trip to the dentist is your best bet.
You may want to do some independent research about buying a grinding teeth mouth guard before making your choice. Many people suffer from bruxism, so consider chatting on health or dental forums with others that share your problem. Often you can find out what has worked best for them or what has not worked. In addition to using a mouth guard there may be stress-relief techniques and even certain types of massage that can alleviate teeth grinding issues in certain people. Sometimes these alternative methods are used in conjuction with nightly wear of a guard.
